Whale and Dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a fantastic destination to watch the splendour of the largest mammal on earth the Blue Whale along with many other types such as the Humpback, Fin whales, Sperm whales, Brydes whale, Killer whales, and Omuras Whale. Situated within the International Whaling Commission’s protected zone, Sri Lanka is considered the best destination in the South Asian region to watch these awe inspiring, magnificent creatures as Sri Lanka lies within the migration path. In addition to whales’ visitors can also spot pods of the ever-smiling dolphins which love to perform and entertain the visitors, flying fish, turtles, whale sharks the world’s largest fish often referred to as the “gentle giants” and manta rays.

The ideal locations for Whale watching are Dondra Point the southernmost point in the island, accessible from Mirissa, Galle and Hikkaduwa and , Kalpitiya in the West coast and Trincomalee in the East coast.  The sightings in each area differ making whale watching in Sri Lanka available for almost 9 – 10 months during the year.

Key Locations for Whale watching

1. Mirissa

Overview: One of the most popular spots for whale watching, Mirissa is a fishing village located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka between the towns of Matara and Galle.

Whales: You can spot the blue whales, brydes whale, sperm whales, fin whales and the occasional orcas (killer whales) .

Dolphins: Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are frequently spotted.

Period: From November to end April is the ideal period as the ocean is calm and the migration happens during this period.

Duration: 4 – 5-hour boat ride to navigate the ocean in search of different species of whales. The boat ride commences around 6.00 am from the Mirissa harbour

2. Kalpitiya

Overview: Located in the northwestern part of Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya is known for its rich marine biodiversity.

Whales: Often visited by sperm whales and the occasional blue whale.

Dolphins: The best place in Sri Lanka to see large pods of friendly spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. (85% – 90% success rate) swimming alongside the boat and leaping into the air performing for the travellers which is a spectacular and unforgettable sight,

Period : Beginning of November to end April with March being the most productive.

Duration :  The boat ride is around 2.5 – 3 hours and the departure time is around 6.30 am

3. Trincomalee

Overview: Situated on the northeastern coast, with one of the best natural harbours and beautiful coast line.  Trincomalee is a bit less frequented but offers excellent whale and dolphin watching opportunities.

Whales: Blue whales are commonly sighted here. The occasional sperm whale also can be spotted.

Dolphins: Spinner, striped and bottlenose dolphins are often seen.

Period: Between March to October when the Whales migrate from the South coast to the East Coast with the best sightings during April/May and August/September

Duration: Boat ride 30 minutes to 1 hour (May to August) as the whales are located between 6 – 8 nautical miles east of Trincomalee. The ride will commence at 6.00 am

Preparation

Ensure all travellers wear life jackets and personal protective equipment is available in the boat including a first aid kit. Check certificates.

A snack and drinking water are usually provided. However, suggest that you bring an additional snack as the ride could last up to 5 hours.

Medication for seasickness if you’re prone to motion sickness.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for hot humid weather.

If you are on any regular medication for any specific conditions, ensure to carry it with you as the journey could last for up to 5 hours.

Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
