About Bentota

Bentota is a coastal town located in the southern part of Sri Lanka and is approximately 65 Km from Colombo and 56 Km north of the city of Galle. The city is straddled by the Bentota river on one side and the Indian Ocen on the other. It’s renowned for its stunning beaches, water sports, excellent accommodation, ayurvedic centers, spas, meditation, Yoga centers and tranquil atmosphere for those who wish to lie on the beach and soak in the sun.

The best time to visit Bentota is from October to April as you avoid the Southwest monsoon, and the sea is ideal for water sports.   

Thing to do in Bentota

1. Sea and Sunbathing

The palm fringed golden beaches of Bentota is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to get a dip in the sea and unwind. The clean and quiet surroundings make it a family friendly place suitable for swimming, lazing around and watching the stunning sun set. Some of the more popular beaches in Bentota are Ventura Beach, Moragalla Beach, Induruwa Beach, Paradise Island accessible by boat and the main Bentota Beach. 

There are several world-class high-end luxury hotels, budget hotels and also home stays along the coast to suit the budget of all travellers.  

Most pf the hotels provide western, spicy Sri Lankan and also other forms of cuisine based on the travellers preference. A variety of Sea food can be obtained in abundance at the ocean front restaurants and travellers need to indulge to their hearts content.

2. Water Sports

Bentota is considered one of the best places for water-based activities as it lies between the Bentota lagoon and the Indian ocean. It offers a myriad selection of water sports that can be undertaken. Commencing with snorkeling, which is ideal due to the clear blue waters, scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing and deep-sea diving, speed boat rides are some of the more popular sports that are undertaken. In addition, activities such as jet skiing, para sailing, fun filled banana boat rides along the river, kayaking, canoeing and tube rides are also on offer.

There are several water sport centers that rent equipment and offer lessons. The prices vary depending on sport and the duration.

It is highly recommended that those visiting Bentota undertake at least a few of these activities.

3. Brief Gardens

Located ten km away from Bentota is the magnificent residence and garden of Bevis Bawa, who was a renowned landscaper and artist of his time. He is the brother of the famous Sri Lankan architect Geofrey Bawa.

Bevis Bawa developed the 20-acre Brief Garden over several decades, starting from the 1920s and opened it to the public in 1969.

The serene and relaxing garden has over 106 varieties of plants and is dotted with his personal creations of sculptures, benches, winding paths, nooks, ponds and a bathing fountain all designed to create an atmosphere of tranquility. It is the perfect place to stroll leisurely and enjoy the aesthetic beauty created by this gifted landscape architect.  

The main house located in the gardens was Bewis Bawa’s home and has a range of interesting artwork and sculptures on display which should not be touched or removed.

It is recommended, as it is a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the landscape and artistry.

4. Turtle Hatchery

The turtle hatchery in Bentota, Sri Lanka, is a renowned conservation facility dedicated to protecting sea turtles. Up to five endangered species of turtles have been frequenting this beach stretch. The turtles are allowed to lay eggs and these eggs are buried in sand until they hatch. The baby turtles that emerge are allowed to thrive in protected tanks for the first few days so that they can get strong before they are set free into the ocean at sun set.

Visitors can learn about various species of sea turtles, their life cycles, and the threats they face in the wild.

The hatchery often allows visitors to observe baby turtles and sometimes participate in releasing them into the ocean, contributing to conservation efforts. However, visitors should ensure that there is no noise and flash photography as this could affect their journey to their homeland, the ocean

 

These hatcheries play a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles and their habitats.

This educational process of conservation of wildlife and the significant role in balancing the ocean’s food chain is highly recommended for children.

Most hatcheries are open from around 8.00 am and close at 5.00 pm

5. Madu River boat safari

Located approximately 25 minutes from Bentota, lies the Madu River where organized boat safaris can be undertaken from the Madu Ganga harbour. This amazing work of nature offers a tranquil and immersive experience making it a must-visit attraction if you are visiting the South coast.

 The Madu River is a wetland estuary of 900 hectares of which 770 are immersed in water and the rest consisting of 64 islands. The river offers a serene and picturesque setting for a boat ride and provides an excellent opportunity to witness the wetland eco system consisting of mangrove forests, small islands and diverse wildlife which include many varieties of birds such as kingfisher, herons, egrets, several varieties of fish and also monkeys and reptiles.

Those visiting the Madu river can also visit a Cinnamon cultivation to learn about the traditional methods of processing the world-famous Ceylon Cinnamon .and also purchase some fresh cinnamon products.

Along the river there are also Fish Massage Therapy spots where visitors can experience a fish pedicure with the small fish nibling at the dead skin on the feet providing a unique and relaxing experience. 

In addition, some of the small islands located along the river has Buddhist temples where visitors could learn the Buddhist practices from the locals.

Towards evening you could also witness the amazing site of fishermen in their canoes with lighted lanterns on traps moving to catch prawn and other shellfish.

Overall, a visit to Madu River is a magnificent opportunity for photos to capture the beauty of the mangroves, the vibrant bird life, traditional fishing or even visiting a small but serene temple.

6. Ayurveda , Yoga and Meditation

Many resorts and wellness centers in Bentota offer Ayurvedic treatments and therapies conducted by qualified Ayurvedic physicians. These can range from massages and herbal baths to specialized detoxification programs tailored to meet the needs of the individual.

The treatment commences after a close consultation with the physician.

 

There are also meditation centers or retreats that offer guided meditation sessions. These sessions often incorporate breathing techniques, mindfulness, developing compassion through loving kindness and sometimes chanting, providing a peaceful environment to cultivate inner calm and clarity.

7. Cycling Tours

Bentota offers fantastic opportunities for cycling tours, blending scenic landscapes with cultural experiences and village life. Some of the recommended places include a leisurely ride along Bentota’s picturesque coastline, with its golden beaches and swaying palm trees. Stop along the way to quench your thirst with a refreshing King Coconut or sample some fresh seafood at a local beachside restaurant.

The Lunuganga Estate, the former country home of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geffrey Bawa, which is a masterpiece of landscape design, and architecture offering a glimpse of his creative genius is another place that one could reach by cycle.

Another option is to cycle to the Brief Garden which is 10 km from Bentota town which is a creation of the landscape architect Bevis Bawa the brother of Geoffrey Bawa which is a another beautifully landscaped garden of exotic beauty.

Visitors could also undertake a guided cycling tour of the tranquil mangrove forests and enjoy the biodiversity of the area.

Bicycles can be hired from many locations supplying this service for a duration of 4 – 5 hours. Guided tours which commence from the hotels are also available. Visitors are encouraged to check the weather forecast, wear appropriate clothing and protective gear, and carry sufficient water and snacks for the journey. Additionally, consider hiring a local guide to enhance your experience and ensure your safety along the way.

8. Kande Viharaya

Also known as Aluthgama Kande Viharaya, it is a famous Buddhist temple located in Aluthgama, within close proximity to the city of Bentota. “Kande Viharaya” translated to “Mountain Monastery” in English sits atop a hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding area.

The 160 feet tall statue of the Buddha sitting cross-legged is considered one of the tallest in the world.

 

The temple is known for its serene atmosphere and intricate architecture, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking spiritual solace or cultural exploration. Many visitors come to admire the beautiful paintings, statues, and other religious artifacts housed within the temple complex.

As this is a religious site, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees when entering the premises

9. Night Life in Bentota

While Bentota may not have dedicated nightclubs similar to larger cities, some upscale hotels and resorts feature bars and lounges with a more sophisticated ambiance. These venues often host special events and live music performances.

Some of the more popular night clubs are the floating discotheque at Ceysands hotel which drifts above the water of the Bentota river and My Kind of place at Vivanta by Taj which has a spacious dance floor and lively music.  

Some bars and lounges in Bentota also offer karaoke music where you can showcase your singing talents or simply enjoy watching others perform.

10. Island hopping
